Immersion in Video Games and Virtual Worlds
We are modifying questionnaires developed by Witmer and Singer for use with military simulators, for
use with video games and virtual worlds. A questionnaire on immersion assesses the degree to which a
person experiences being immersed in different tasks and situation. This is an individual difference
between people. Video game developers then attempt to design games in which people sense a "pressence" in the
game. We are exploring a number of different video games and virtual worlds to see how effective they are
in creating a feeling of being there.
